How can it be that such a diverse city hardly produces and prominently presents exciting forms of expression in this field, and that participatory art forms have so far been aesthetically less progressive and, above all, underfunded? Which forms of social/community art are to be found and in which points does it urgently need an update?
an investigation on Berlins social art undertook a 4-month working process on understandings and practices of social art and community projects in Berlin. The research was focussed on existing understandings and implementations in the field of social art / community art. The research was based on the perception that more advanced understandings and artistically higher quality forms of the two art forms exist in countries such as Belgium, France or England. This impression was examined and it was asked what structural differences can be discerned with regard to Germany in the production and promotion of the art forms. Aspects such as sustainable forms of empowerment of the individual and/or specific communities were given special attention. For the research, interviews were conducted with international artists and organizations that realize social art / community art. The participating artists subsequently met for a social art meeting, which was a response to the artists' expressed need for networking with actors from this field and gave them space for an intensive exchange about their own working practices, interests and current issues.
